Prime Minister Hun Manet Calls for Action Against Journalists Spreading Misinformation

PHNOM PENH, July 19, 2024 — During the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Samdech Preah Brahma Rattanamony Pin Sem Museum in Siem Reap on July 18, Prime Minister Hun Manet addressed the pressing issue of fake news in the media. He has directed the Minister of Information, Neth Pheaktra, to consider revoking the licenses of journalists who deliberately disseminate false information and to place them on a blacklist.

Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized that such deceptive practices not only mislead the public but also tarnish the reputation of the journalism profession and pollute societal values. He reinforced that the Royal Government is committed to upholding freedom of expression but stressed that all expressions must be lawful, respect others' rights, and be based on factual information.

He urged journalists across the nation to maintain high standards of professional ethics to collaboratively combat the spread of fake news and misinformation. The government continues to invest in initiatives to foster professional, accountable journalism and to ensure that press freedom is supported by factual reporting.
